sort of slow Sunday

in which our plucky heroine does a fair number of tiny tasks...

... because incremental progress is still progress
※※※

~ many tiny owl boxes ~
All during various weekend zoom meetings, origami does not require much of my concentrated attention, but gives my hands something productive to do... After my earlier dive into making wee owls from painted egg carton cardboard, those owls needed to be packed away to become part the next Advent Of A Better Year swap at the end of 2026. Hence, many many two piece rectangular boxes have been folded. I'm going to put my notes from this year's swap, the master copy about "what the swap is" for including with bonus boxes, and the contact info from participants, as well as my origami box master models, the instructions and preferred sizes. It might be time to give the swap it's own notebook. And think/research setting up a Discord server for next year.
※※※

After rummaging around found a suitable frame, just right for the Cuisine of the Angels print, and made a narrow mat covered in metallic blue and silver Japanese paper to set it off nicely. It will be a perfect addition to my "gallery wall" on the west side of the kitchen above the chest freezer.
※※※

Not yet attaching the toggles to the raincoat, but did a bit of faffing about with cut paper and the sample toggle. Next step will be making an actual sample of the overlap to sort out specific placement of the various pieces. This is what results from choosing to follow my own concepts rather than following a sewing pattern. I get to figure things out myself, particularly since the various design choices combined in this coat project are no more particularly standard than my own size and shape. When it is done, it may see me out, depending on how long I remain in the bright world. There are already so many aspects of this that make me really happy. The fit is great, the length is great, and the pocket location/style/execution are probably the best I have ever done. Now as long as I can get the front closure to work (and not somehow screw it up at the last minute) I will finally have the raincoat of my dreams. This image of a wool topcoat with leather toggles is my placement reference, since it has been ages since I had a duffle coat, and must needs be paying attention to where the various overlap vs edges vs parts of the toggle should be placed.

Friday findings

in which our plucky heroine appreciates positive momentum...

My left eye continues to slowly improve each day, with more ability to focus, and less pain. Still very sensitive to sunlight, moreso than my usual. Hopefully by next week it'll be possible to get back to studio work and sewing tasks. Most delightfully, there are a number of new participants in the Advent of A Better Year in 2026 swap, not quite sure how many, but significantly more than seemed likely a few weeks earlier. As I told Mischa tonight: "I feel like if I have done nothing else worthwhile, the Advent Swap has continued to be congruent with my life purpose"
※※※

~ this is not a bar ~
When eyes do not focus, what is observed is not always what we expect. This was not a porch front bar, with dark ghostly patrons quietly imbibing. I was much reminded of the shadow people on the train in Spirited Away. It was a surprise when on closer view I found it to be a line of shrubs..
※※※

Progress on the additional two sets of Advent Swap treats continues apace. Eighteen origami pinwheel boxes, each containing a wheat ear penny wrapped in a paper "fortune": see a penny - pick it up - all that day you'll have good luck, will also be stamped with a four leaf clover motif. Found a few uncarved erasers and will do a bit of carving this weekend.
※※※

The mobile phone charges very slowly, but eats up charge quickly. Not sure if it is a problem with the phone, a problem with the charger, or a problem with the cable(s). Will start by replacing cable(s), and think about acquiring or finding where at least some of the former wall plug in chargers have gone. At some point will probably need to replace phone, because I suspect that the spot where the cable plugs into the phone is slightly damaged.

the lid to my beloved Drusa-made bentwood sewing box, missing for several weeks now, turned up buried behind the serger in the sewing zone. No idea why there, but delighted to have them reunited

Ctrl-P FTW

in which our plucky heroine learns about a helpful resource...

Just found out this week that our public library allows free of printing black and white copies. Which led to my printing out all the pages of Off The Cuff sleeve (tower) placket tutorial for my shirt making project later this year, and putting together a Useful Resource binder of tips and techniques.

~ words to live by ~
Donna included some extra treats in her box of things for the Advent Swap. Including this charming sticker, which is so necessary to remember in these modern times and particularly appropriate for this weekend.
※※※

Found this pretty origami envelope tutorial, which I plan on using for wrapping some of the mostly flat items I'll be including in my swap treats. Start with a square that is 3x the desired size for your finished envelope. My 4" square template makes a finished envelope just over 1¼ " square.

hummingbird and moon

in which our plucky heroine reiterates...

Noticing the beauty of the natural world is one thing that sustains me in these times. As does noticing that others also take joy in seeing the same. Last night and this morning both, strangers commented to me about the especially large and beautiful full moon, and my dopamine reservoir gauge no longer registers empty. We are all in this world together.

And later, while walking next to a rosemary shrub taller than me, there was a small buzzing sound. At about face level, a dark green hummingbird, busy with the blue flowers, hovered watching me for a moment before turning back to their breakfast.
※※※

Ellie Cordova is a performer of original skits and music, and this thought experiment video of hers came across my online feeds yesterday. Reminded me of the point of the practice of "daily gratitudes" aka "three good things"...
※※※

My neighbor Karla seems to take great joy in decorating her yard in various ways with lighting and inflatables, some of which remain all the year round (an assortment of twinkling and moving LED colored lighting turns her backyard into the memory of festival spaces every night), and some just for holidays. Christmas and Halloween in particular, and as we are almost a week into October, there are new delights arriving almost daily. New this year, strands of purple lights are adorning her entryway today. S ome of the "spooky" dragons from last year are already starting to arrive. These all make me so happy.
※※※

This origami envelope is another useful way of wrapping flat or mostly flat things for the Advent of a Better Year Swap. It will require a bit of experimentation to figure out the best size of square to start with for whatever you want to wrap. Ive played a bit to start with: 5"=3"x1¾" or 4⅜"=2⅝"x1⅝" or 3"=1⅞"x1⅛"...
※※※

Returning to my digital camera might be my next step. If the venerable card reader can be found (put it away "somewhere safe"), it might be possible to send images to the laptop from the camera, process them, and put them onto a memory stick, along with plain text content, and take frequent bike rides to the library to upload actual posts. This was how I did it for several years before home internet. And both my digital cameras are much more adaptable for photography than the phone. Just means carrying another thing around, but either one is Very Small and comparatively light.

Tuesday tidbits

in which our plucky heroine bundles up to keep warm...

on a cold if dry day, it seemed a good plan to put on my Keen boots to ride down to the post office this afternoon. The almost knee high leather makes a definite difference in comfort. I was able to bail out the postage due envelope, which contained the first set of items for the springtime art exchange

(I must make sure folks know that anything (even if it fits in an ordinary envelope) other than a few totally flat pieces of artwork on paper will be deemed a "parcel" by USPS. Parcels have different and more expensive postage, depending on both size and destination.
※※※

~ quick and easy ~

Checked out "Making Things: Finding Use, Meaning, and Satisfaction in Crafting Everyday Objects" from the library, because it was very pretty, and also new-to-me... while there wasn't tons of skillset info I didn't already have, this origami box (inspired by Sok Song's "magazine box") delighted me. It uses rectangular pieces of paper, is easy to fold up when a small temporary container is needed, and the folding sequence is easy to memorise.

(I disagree however with their avowal that two folded the same size will work well for bottom and lid; yes you can squoosh them together that way, and again would be just fine for very temporary, but a lid just slightly larger will work better)
※※※

The venerable set of tiny (smallest about the size of sewing needles) pentagonal broaches that I use for enlarging the holes in pearls (among other things) are probably at least 30 years old. Their plastic "handles" are starting to shatter, which renders them almost unuseable, since without the handles the angular sharp steel shafts are exposed.

After much research, I found "Milliput" a specific epoxy putty that seems an ideal substance to form new handles from. But said putty is not available anywhere I called in the city, indeed most of the places I found to purchase it were not in the US. As I've mentioned, I prefer to not patronise the behemoth that begins with "A"; fortunately I did find Atlas Preservation, who sell supplies for gravestone restoration! and they had several different colors and grades of Milliput. An order has been placed, and there will be future experiments. (Also ordered some terra cotta color, thinking that some wee little 1:12 planter pots may be possible? worth at try...)
※※※

Very incremental progress on my stripey cardigan sleeves... I need more practice on the jogless join, as I don't seem to be able to remember it from one round to the next. Must needs sit with the photo tutorial open in front of me each gorram time, or tink backwards to try again... Still, the eventual results will be a wooly bit of whimsy. At least that is my hope, since it looks nothing like my inspiration, and nothing like my sketch.

wishful Wednesday

in which our plucky heroine is feeling wistful...

about this year's upcoming natal day. And I have been buying myself a very small assortment of moderately amusing or useful gifts, since there can be no actual party (which would of course be the best gift of all). Maybe someday... but in the meantime, there will be a much desired music CD, and some visual amusements of the DVD sort, and a useful small tamarai carafe to mark the 19th houseversary last Saturday (December 7th)

~ day 11 and day 10 ~

.
Day 11 - a tiny 1/2" millefiori glass heart... and the clever way it was wrapped is in itself a gift, as it is a different and new to me origami-esque way of wrapping small flat items. I shall have to try and figure out how it is done...

On day 10 - a so pretty bit of (what looked like indigo) printed fabric was wrapped around a delicate crocheted leaf-and-blossom bookmark. The bookmark will be handy for my bullet journal, and the fabric will yield at least one tiny square to add to my next tinyworld patchwork quilt...

~ day 9 ~
This morning, I unfolded a hand painted patch of curious symbology... not sure if it has particular significance or is just for pretty. I tried to look it up online but couldn't escape the gravitational field of valknot. After a visit to the ironing board, it flattened out nicely, and could be added to any of a number of things as decoration.

Edited to add: apparently the design is "The Legend of Zelda Gold Triforce patch", and since I know less than nothing about that, I will not use it to decorate things worn outside the house.

Monday malaise

in which our plucky heroine is feeling rather puny...

Ever since I was a child, stress gives me the collywobbles, and my tummy takes a turn for the worse, and since there are some new challenges currently on the table, I ended up with part of the day discommoded, as it were. Some tea and broth, rice and maybe some applesauce shall hopefully set me to rights, but today was not as productive as I had hoped for. Still, I've made some lists of the what to do next items, and will be gentle with self for the rest of the evening.
※※※

Bit by bit, various additions to the tinyfolk wardrobe tin come together into holiday outfits. I hope to have festive clothing for all four of them this year. The witchy hats I knit last October will be perfect spooky season accessories… I made Opal a black silk top and the gored skirt this year, and the crocheted camisole from Dawn makes an excellent vest. Now all she needs is some sort of autumnal footgear… I’m thinking about sponsoring a Tiny Rag Doll Nation spooky season challenge next month, if folks would be interested…
※※※

My friend Eva shared the recipe for this Creamy Pumpkin and Red Lentil Soup, and it is so delicious and so easy that I have added it to my notebook of "make this again"... Most of the ingredients are (or can be) shelf stable pantry staples, or refrigerator condiments. I normally have Thai red chili paste, and Better Than Bouillon on hand, which is also a plus. I usually have some coconut milk, but up to now hadn't kept canned pumpkin on the storage shelf. That will change, and this time of year it sometimes is on sale, so a good time to stock up... I did pre-soak the red lentils, not that they need it, but it makes the on the stove cooking time even shorter.
※※※

Another box suitable for wrapping tiny gifts for the Advent Swap is the masu box. If you start with a 3½" square of paper, your finished box will measure 1¼" across. The tutorial also has directions for folding a second box just larger enough to make a lid that slides over the first box:

Box of boxes

in which our plucky heroine plays with folded paper...

I remember the first time I tried origami, I couldn't have been more than 6 years old, as we were still living in Connecticut. There was a gift of what seemed like a big book, with colorful diagrams and lots of paper. Ever since, on occasion, I have enjoyed turning something flat into something dimensional.

For the Advent of A Better Year in 2025 swap, one of the rules is that all the tiny gifts need to be pre-wrapped, as it would drive me bonkers to have to wrap everyone's contributions. Still, I figure that sharing tutorials in case anyone else enjoys origami might be helpful, as it is an easy way to create pretty wrappings for gifts. Also, I can test out the instructions and figure out the correct size of paper to start with, to get a finished piece that is 1¼" square...
※※※

~ a box with an integral lid ~
This box is folded to become a cube with an attached lid. If you start with a 5¼" square, the finished box is just the right size (1¼" square), here you can see I have stuffed it with a half dozen of the flower-top boxes... This shape turns out a little too flimsy when made in ordinary origami paper; so something just a little heavier works better...
Tutorial: Origami Box with Integral Lid
※※※

~ a flower-top box ~
This box is very flat - suitable for holding a more 2D gift, such as a small painting or print, or even a surprise fortune? I'd been wanting to try folding this design for a while, as I've been fascinated by Zhen Xian Bao for years now, but never tried making any of the several styles of components that they require.  If you start with a rectangle that is 2½" x 5" you will get a finished box that is 1¼" square...

fragments from week 2

in which our plucky heroine notes the ups and downs...

One of the better parts of the last week was Gersvinda and her trusty truck, and being able to bring home a Bosc pear tree from the 25% off tree sale at Portland Nursery. Her work schedule makes it challenging to spend time together, so it is a treat when the stars align. And it was her suggestion, when the closer nursery had only one scraggly espalier left, that we go a little further and check out the other site... Bingo, there weren't many pears left, but Bosc was one of the three varieties I had on the list... so... it is currently in the backyard waiting for me to decide where to plant it. I am considering near the fence and adjacent to Feral Grape (who will need to be pruned back). There is a big pear tree next door, which will be good for pollination...

Acantha, during our conversation earlier this week about garden planning and flowers and such, suggested that I pay attention to what sorts of outdoor yards and gardens that I find appealling, while I am out and about on my bicycle... Well, I never thought to do that in all my years!
※※※

~ Mx Green Jeans ~
>
The belated last of the week 11 pants project is this pair of cargo pants for Almandine. Here she is hanging out while I type this blog post; the shelf my monitor sits on is cluttered with bits and bobs, but makes it clear as well how very tiny the tinyfolk are.

This is actually the last week of the 13 week Tiny Wardrobe Challenge, and the garment of the week is a handknit cardigan. I will probably feature the one I made for Opal, back a few months ago when the challenge started. Mostly because I want to spend more time enameling and less time playing, now that the weather has cooled down. Eventually though, I do want to try making a tiny handknit cardigan with the faux cables that Dawn shared a link to a while back...
※※※

Time to start thinking again about items and planning for the Advent Swap. Here are two different origami containers: This simple masu-style box is a classic; folded from 3½" square paper it makes a perfect 1¼" box for packaging up treats. This twist-top storage container is a bit more tricky to make, but would be great for flat treats; start with a 5" x 2½" rectangle to make a 1¼" packet...
※※※

I've been continuing to try and rest, and stretch, and ride my bike, all in the hope that my CrankyBack/Hip/Haunch will stop being quite so cranky. There has been some improvement - it isn't waking me up at night. I don't know if stepping up onto stairs is still problematic (as I found out last week at the transit center); Acorn Cottage is thankfully all one level. I was able to put my socks on this morning, with difficulty but without tears. Getting old is not for the weak...
※※※

This is a lovely illusion, but since Instagram won't share it here, you will have to go see for yourself...

filling in some gaps...

in which our plucky heroine has a week of upson-downs...

Have been spending most of my energy this week doing various sorts of preparation* for the periodontal surgery Monday morning. Shopping for groceries suitable for eating without being able to chew. Making soup and broth and freezing it. Getting various chores caught up so I can rest and recover, at least as much as that is possible?? Doing my best not to panic/worry about the whole situation. My hope is that it will be bearable. Not knowing what to expect is the worst. At least when they do the second tooth, I will have a bit better handle on it, no matter how bad it is...
※※※

Tuesday - The citrus shipments this year has been somewhat noticeably less varied than in years past. I finally found some organic blood oranges earlier this week at Fred Meyers!? of all places, so was able to put up a few jars of marmalade last night. Then I found some organic Cara Cara oranges, so will make a bit more later this week, and call it good enough, since it is likely that there won't be a lot more coming in, with springtime so early and all this year.

Tuesday evening - Once again I have no phone AND this time no Internet either... plucky heroine is grumpy. After a quite challenging afterdark exploration, I discovered that there is no dial tone at the box where the phone lines meet the house, so hopefully this is Century Link's problem to fix...

Wednesday morning - as of this morning, I do have internet, though the electrons are moving in molasses slow dribs and drabs, not at their usual speed, but still have no phone service at all. (plucky heroine waiting on the technician or someone like them)

Later Wednesday morning - Yay! Plucky heroine has phone service again!! Cheerful technician checked phone entry box and then had to go further upline and sort out problems in the transmission wires, somewhere up in the sky there was an old corroded and broken wire, which has now been repaired. All the crackles and static formerly on the landline phone are also gone! (happy dance)

Wednesday night - 3 Mountains Baronial Social, and I brought more origami paper and continued teaching folks how to fold cranes. Have now used up the entire first package of 100 squares of origami paper. I think there is now enough to string at least two, maybe three 4ft strands. I also had a chance to talk to Topaz about possible classes I can teach at future social night gatherings...

I got a mysterious fangirl letter last week, from someone who did not identify themself, someone who reads my blog... They had lovely complimentary things to say about me and standing in my kitchen reading their words and feeling all warm in the middle, and then read that they had recently had a sort of financial windfall, and wanted to share a bit of it with me... inside the envelope with the letter was another envelope with two 100 bills!?!

My jaw literally dropped when I opened that, and I stood in my kitchen making sort of weird noises standing there with my mouth hanging open.
They wrote that they were too shy to let me know who they were, but wanted me to have a treat to use as I saw fit, signed the letter with a pseudonym, and all I can guess is that they are someone in the Bay Area (because the postmark was San Francisco) so I figure that the benign universe wants me to do well and get through this dental thing, and that both people I know, and people I don't even know, wish me well...

and... it goes on a bit more, even, because I took some of that money and got myself a pair of warm bedroom slippers, which I have wanted for ages. I found a local store that carried the ones I wanted, because trying on footwear before buying it is important crucial (plucky heroine has odd feet), and because I really try to support local vendors as a matter of policy. So I went to the store**, and did the try on various sizes etc thing, which took a while, and when time came to pay, there was someone ahead of me at the one register... the clerk was very apologetic, and I said my usual thing, about how "unless someone was bleeding or having a baby there was no need to be in a rush and I wasn't fussed" and there was some other pleasant and amusing chat while we were all waiting for the other transaction to go through...

after I was done, and getting ready to head out, a different clerk, a young man, came over and said how he just had to tell me that he just loved my positive attitude and point of view!! I tell you, that made my yesterday so good that I was practically dancing when I left their shop because, you see, I wasn't always that sort of person... I work really hard to try and focus on the positive, and I don't always succeed, though I do a lot better now than when I was a younger woman...

Friday - 9PM and finally starting to be able to see again after getting eyes dilated this morning for eye exam... dang that stuff takes a long time to wear off!! I have an inherited condition that requires regular monitoring every six months. At least this time they were able to find and use the "weaker" drops; the regular drops usually take 24 hrs to wear off. This time I got a good eye doctor who thoroughly explained the various test results, showing what had and had not changed over the last few years, was very reassuring to know that the eyes are still within the norm!

Saturday - had a lovely visit with my friend Chris, who drove me out to Home Depot to buy a roll of reed matting to attempt to block out the view of the horrible pastel playhouse trash behind the cross alley house. She stayed to help attach the matting to the chain link fence, and I cooked up a batch of pot stickers so we could have a late lunch. The matting is sadly not opaque, even in four layers, but does blur the view somewhat.

today's gratitude - the kindness of friends, both known and unknown, plus the delightful soft felted wool of my new slippers, which insulate my feet from the Very Cold Floor in the morning

*... I got some powdered whey protein on the suggestion of the dietician at my PCP office, which I tried out added to yoghurt, with fruit and a little flaxseed meal. Is a bit "chalky" but edible, significantly more nutritious, thankfully not nasty-textured (it is vanilla flavor, but fairly mild tasting; I was unable to find unflavored whey protein which would have been my preference, so it is limited to being used in yoghurt/fruit, as I think vanilla is not so good combined with savory broth (bleah)

Just made up split pea soup with veggies, cooked until everything was completely soft. The guideline is nothing more solid than scrambled eggs. Added a sprinkle of smoked paprika to give a good flavor to the meat-free soup, since meat requires chewing, and packed into two freezer containers. Going to eat up the lovely crunchy/chewy things beforehand..

** "Imelda's" isn't that a great name for a shoe shop?

good things come in small packages

...in which our plucky heroine unpacks some very tiny boxes...

There was squee-ing last night when I opened the box! A pair of very wee origami silver Akita earrings, a gift from my pal Raven... they are perfectly detailed and perfectly delightful.

As a young child I spent a lot of time folding origami; I remember how to fold a crane and probably a "flapping bird", but now I want to look up and see if I can find instructions for this design. Honor Feast (this October) has a Japanese theme this year after all...

In addition, just last week I indulged myself in tiny whimsical online shopping treat, intended as artwork components. The reverse sides show counter enamel; (in various colors, much to my delight) somehow it didn't occur to me that they would be made from vitreous enamel...

... and the front sides are elegantly detailed... yes they are pocketwatch clock faces, and no I am not turning steampunk! All of the white ones are true enamel, the black one is painted. I am particularly pleased that some of them are from the Waltham Watch Factory; decades ago my first apartment was within walking distance of that location along the Charles River where it passes through Waltham, though the factory itself had long since been closed...
